There were still records and archived accounts preserved within the archives of House L'lerim describing what life had been like in Skjoldmarch after the Great Crusade, and even during the time of the Horus Heresy, all the way until the fall of Cadia. Since the Imperium had been torn into two halves and Skjoldmarch remained on the Nihilus side, every single day had become a struggle for survival. The people who lived here had always been a military society; military training was mandatory for all, and many served not only within the Death Squads of Skjoldmarch, but also within well-known Imperial organisations beyond their home.
This was equally true for House L'lerim. The current Earl of Skjoldmarch was none other than Jonathan L'lerim, a legendary Commissar in the eastern regions of Nihilus. Over the course of his life, the man had fought nearly everything imaginable; orks, Chaos, the tyranids, and even ordinary human deserters and traitors. Throughout the centuries, House L'lerim had forged numerous alliances with neighbouring houses, though such agreements belonged to a distant past now, several generations removed. Yet the forces of Chaos and the Tyranids had begun to stir in the east once more, and Jon believed the time had come to seek a new alliance.
A Triumvirate; hopefully. That was what the man hoped for, for here everything revolved around survival, and the more allies one possessed, the greater the chances of enduring whatever came. No one could ever truly know what the future might bring. Every generation had hoped that the Imperium Sanctus would one day find a way into Nihilus and come to their rescue. Jon knew that there were those who no longer believed Terra and the other half of the Imperium even existed. The older man, however, still believed. He hoped that the Houses Barran and Demici thought in a similar manner, and that together they might endure for as long as possible.
Thus the man sent invitations to the leaders of the other two houses. In them he briefly outlined that Skjoldmarch and House L'lerim were prepared to enter into a military - and perhaps even a commercial - agreement with the two houses, one that would serve the interests of all involved. A mutual non-aggression and defensive pact was always useful. Jon had witnessed battles where the internal factions of the Imperium fought among themselves, rival noble houses or merchant dynasties turning their strength against one another. If he had possessed the power, the man would have put an end to such internal rivalries entirely; they only weakened the Imperium. This new alliance was partly meant to ensure that his own house would not be drawn into such conflicts.
The man arrived at the meeting place earlier than the appointed hour. Not solely to inspect the location - though the thought had crossed his mind - but simply because Jon was the sort of man who always arrived ahead of time. Thus, by the moment the other two men arrived, he was already there waiting. When Pietro and Michael appeared - whether together or separately - Jon rose to his feet and greeted the leaders of the two houses with a firm handshake. Only once both of them had arrived did he finally speak.
"Welcome, gentlemen!" the man said in a cold, soldierly tone. "Thank you for coming. I trust that today we may reach an agreement that proves satisfactory for all of us. Do you have any questions, or shall we begin with the matter that brought us here?"
