General Information
- Name: Knights Ascendant
- Classification: Adeptus Astartes Chapter
- Affiliation:
- Description: The Knights Ascendant are an Ultima Founding successor Chapter of the Dark Angels, neither consented nor known to the Unforgiven at the time of their founding, but only to the returned Primarch Lion El'Jonson. Proclaiming to welcome all loyal Fallen back into the fold of the Imperium, these Risen united under the old Uncrowned Prince Hiperion and became known as the Knights Ascendant.
Firmly embedded into the structures of the Imperium Nihilus by now, the Chapter is a rare example of pragmatist and traditional zeal. Due to many Battlebrothers being themselves or directly trained by those that still fought in the Great Crusade, they are known equally as idealists and pragmatists, accepting the dire circumstances of the Galaxy but also believing that their Crusader spirit is now more necessary than ever. Mankind cannot be lost again to an Age of Strife and the Cicatrix is just a man-made terror and can therefore be battled with iron will and determination.
Holding high the traditions of the original First Legion and the Knights of Caliban, the Chapter is a knightly, secretive and monastic reflection of its origins. With fanatical zero tolerance for anything Chaos tainted, they are equally keen to prove they were never tainted themselves as well as to rid the Galaxy of those who are. Their reputation as executioners and exterminators has been reborn since their return, marking them a powerful tool in the arsenal of Imperium Nihilus. Especially their Deathwing and Dreadwing, echoes of ancient structures, have shown their worth many times over.
The Knights Ascendant bow to nothing but the judgement of the Lion and the Golden Throne itself. They have a vicious distaste for the Inquisition and a careful relationship with all Unforgiven due to their origins. Neither has ever or will stop them to aid the crumbling Imperium in its hours of need.

Overview
- Influence: The Vandemar Sector is the domain of the Knights Ascendant, firmly embedded in its structures and known as its protectors. Mithras is where their Chapter Monastery is located, a cold world with tundras, mountains and snow covered forests. Having taken inspiration from their revered brothers of the XIIIth Legion, the Knights Ascendant are not merely warriors, but practice statecraft as well. A dire necessity in their eyes due to the fractured state of the Imperium Nihilus. They hold firm influence in the Sector being involved in day to day politics and rule.
- Membership:
- The Night Watch
The Night Watch is the first trial every Aspirant has to undergo on the steps of the Fortress Monastery. During the winter months, youths aged five to eight of Vandemar may be send to Mithras and will be set outside the stronghold to stand for an entire day and night. Not leave their spot, with neither food nor drink nor sufficient clothing, meanwhile lured by promises of warm food, clothing and the warmth of fire by the Gatekeepers. Only those that remain unmoved, untempted will eventually enter the Fortress Monastery and begin the real selection process. - The Verbatim
Six years is the duration for an Aspirant to master the Verbatim, the ancient laws of war and combat of Caliban. Under the relentless drill of the Paladins, the Aspirants are taught combat, willpower, fortitude, warcraft and philosophy. Slowly removing those that are not able to keep up. Brotherhood and rivalry is strongly supported, early on exploring and exploiting bonds that can drive individuals beyond their capacities. At the end stand the Trials of Ascendance, testing their willpower, physical resilience, combat prowess, tactical ability, mental fortitude and loyalty. If passed, the Aspirant is permitted to undergo the receiving of the gene-seed. If they do not pass and survive however, they are given the choice to either join the Chapter as an Armiger or be inducted into the Vandemarian Schola Exercitum, the local military institute. The Chapter is not known to waste any potential.

Origins
The Order of the Knights Ascendant, formerly the 7th Order of the Dark Angels Legion, is now a refounded Successor Chapter of the Ultima Founding. Not coming into existence by design or will of the Adeptus Terra or their gene-brothers of the Dark Angels, the Knights Ascendant came into existence by the will of their Primarch himself.
Entirely composed of Risen Dark Angels and Primaris reinforcements, the Knights Ascendant are coming from in large parts to what before were only known as the Fallen. Fallen which never had betrayed the Emperor, Imperium or their Primarch but were led into battle by falsehoods and scattered during the destruction of Caliban.
For some it were only years, for others decades and for few centuries or even millennia in which they were hunted by the descendants of their brothers, fratricide born of ignorance and dogma. But the Lion returned and found that many Fallen had never indeed fallen to the ways of Horus and the Traitors, but merely were lied to, misguided and had suffered under his draconian punishment. By his decree those free of the taint of Chaos were to become Dark Angels once more, not Fallen, not Unforgiven, but Risen.
Under the former Knight-Praetor Hiperion, many had gathered, not only from his Order, but all that were afraid to be executed and hunted for reasons they did not understand. Hidden away from the prying eyes of the Imperium they waited and held their breath, clining to the ways of the First Legion, from Terran born Uncrowned Princes to Calibanite Knights, they held their traditions with pride and subtly aided the Imperium wherever it was feasible and possible. Not few got lost to the zeal of their successor kin, but they never wavered, never faltered.
When the Imperium was split in two by the Cicatrix Maledictum, the choice to rally to the side of the beleaguered people of the Imperium Nihilus was swiftly made. After finding their Primarch returned, cooled contact quickly turned into fateful rejuventation.
