Discussion Blood Angels

I don't like the idea that the Blood Angels are sometimes portrayed as vampire-like or even space-vampire. First, I have no problem with the fact that many people think Sanguinius drank blood and not only his sons. I played this thought/line.

True, in my view this isn't some kind of vampire rip-off thing; I like to imagine that if the Great Angel did drink blood, it would have been a sacred act in his case, rather than something vampire-like. There are many RL myths that suggest drinking blood allows you to take on another's spirit, grow closer to them, or even become one with them. And so, in this regard, it fits Sanguinius.

To give an example:
If Sanguinius takes blood during a ritual, to me it feels most like this:
– sharing pain
– taking on sin
– taking on suffering
– establishing a spiritual connection

Not "I"ll take your life" or "I'll drink blood because it is cool or I'm hungry/thirsty" but "I'll embrace your burden". This description fits biblical angels much better than the idealized angels found, for example, in fantasy or Renaissance art.

And that's something I think suits him… Of course with his death this turned into the Blood Rage which is totally acceptable, especially when you consider how the Great Angel died.

What do you guys think about all this? Do you prefer the "space vampire" theory, or is there some truth to the way I see it, or do you have a different take on this?

Well, Space Marines are not considered to be zombies (usually) just because they dabble in the occasional brain consumption.
In fact, they gain a benefit from it, some of the knowledge of the prey, up to and including the ability to operate extremely complex machinery (a titan).

I don't remember reading anywhere that S drank any blood at all, but like his brothers, he too had some severe anger management issues, making him more mortal than he would like to appear.

As for those of the chapter who have pale vampire-like complexion, vampire-like fangs, urges to drink blood like a vampire, while belonging to a chapter with the word blood literally in the name and a drop of blood as part of their heraldry, those are all surely just a string of coincidental overlaps, and previous millenia writing.
Members of the chapter are not undead, nor are they widely believed to have any biological deficiency that can only be solved by consuming blood of other humans or sufficiently similar species.
They are "just" messed-up in the head. Very much. Probably.

But, since this is Warhammer, most things we can read are from the point of view of unreliable narrators and propaganda, the only universal truth is that in the end, everything is food.
